One fine morning, Emperor Akbar strolled through his palace gardens, enjoying the cool breeze and the vibrant greenery. The garden, as always, was alive with chirping birds, blooming flowers, and rustling leaves. While walking, Akbar noticed a large flock of crows gathered near the fountain. Some cawed loudly, others flew between the trees, and a few strutted around, pecking at crumbs left by visitors.
Amused by the sheer number of crows, a curious thought struck Akbar. He decided to test his minister Birbal’s wit with an unusual question. Returning to the court, Akbar called for Birbal, who arrived promptly and bowed respectfully.
“Birbal,” Akbar said with a playful smile, “I have a question for you. Tell me, how many crows are there in my kingdom?”
The court fell silent, and the courtiers exchanged puzzled glances. How could anyone possibly know the answer to such a question? Yet Birbal, known for his quick thinking, didn’t flinch. He smiled, folded his hands, and said, “Jahanpanah, there are exactly 95,463 crows in your kingdom.”
The courtiers gasped in surprise. Birbal had answered with such confidence that it seemed impossible to doubt him.
Akbar, amused but skeptical, decided to probe further. “Birbal,” he said, “what if I order my men to count the crows, and the number turns out to be more than 95,463?”
Without missing a beat, Birbal replied, “If the count is higher, Jahanpanah, it means that some crows from neighboring kingdoms have come to visit your prosperous and peaceful lands. Your rule is so benevolent that even birds seek refuge here.”
Akbar chuckled at this clever response but pressed on, “And what if the count is fewer?”
Birbal’s eyes twinkled as he answered, “If there are fewer, Jahanpanah, it means that some of our crows have gone to visit their relatives in other kingdoms or perhaps to spread the word of your greatness.”
The entire court erupted in laughter, and Akbar himself couldn’t help but smile. “Birbal,” he said, “your wit is as sharp as ever. You’ve once again proven why you are my most trusted advisor.”
News of Birbal’s clever response spread throughout the kingdom, becoming a favorite tale among the people. It was said that in Akbar’s court, no question was too difficult for Birbal to answer with wit and wisdom.
